Additionally, we also experienced a tea ceremony where we learned about the spiritual practice of the ceremony. We even learned how to make a wicked matcha tea with a small bamboo whisk! In Buddhism, what is followed for day-to-day acts is known as The Ten Paramitas. These are teachings and guidelines that help to offer a respectful and wholesome lifestyle. The Ten Paramitas are;

Spirituality in Bali
Each year, thousands of travelers flock to spiritual Bali for healing of the mind, body and soul. Along with a serene environment, this destination is home to many spiritual sites as well.
Travelers are eager to visit the island temples covering this relaxation hot spot. Housing at least 11,000 temples both regional and local, festivals and ceremonies are common in this destination.
Although Bali has numerous temples, there are six known supremely holy temples, also known as Sad Kahyangan, or the "six temples of the world". These temples are Pura Besakih, Pura Lempuyang Luhur, Pura Gua Lawah, Pura Batukaru, Pura Pusering Jagat, and Pura Uluwatu.
Unique to Bali, the temples are not closed buildings, but large rectangular courtyards welcoming all. Alongside the temples lay rows of shrines and altars dedicated to various gods and deities. In Bali, the gods and deities worshipped are believed to not be immediately present in the locations, except for on the specific dates of the temples festivals.
Balinese families commonly belong to not one temple, but half a dozen or more. In addition, these families "devote several weeks of labor each year to maintaining the temples and preparing them for numerous festivals". During these festivals, it is only a small portion of the ceremony that is dedicated to offerings to the gods and deities. The largest parts of these festivals are usually spent on sacred dance and music.

Christmas in India
With over 25 million Christians in residency, India has its own special Christmas traditions too! Like many other countries, midnight mass is a very important part of the Christmas holiday in India.
However, instead of having traditional Christmas Trees, participants use a banana or mango tree for decorating. People often use mango leaves to decorate their homes in holiday fashion as well!
In the south of India, a common way for Christians to celebrate is also to put small oil burning clay lamps on the flat roofs of their homes, especially in Goa.
Christians in Goa love to celebrate Christmas, due to Goa having many 'western' customs as part of their Christmas as Goa has historical connections with Portugal. A fun activity for these participants also includes caroling, and cooking! Specifically, the fruit Christmas Cake is quite popular in these areas.
In addition to western customs, many local sweets are also eaten at Christmas in Goa. Popular sweets include neureos (small pastries which are stuffed with dry fruit and coconut and fried) and dodol (like toffee that has coconut and cashew in it)!

Giving Back; India
One of the continuing themes of the holidays regardless of which holidays you participate in, is giving back. It is often said that giving to others is the source of true happiness, and you should be the change that you want to see in the world. In the words of Dalai Lama, "If you think you’re too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito.”
The change you make to help others can be as small as in your local communities, or in global communities. At learning Journeys, we proudly have a partnership with two NGO's in India that visitors can actively participate in on our journeys:
1) Purkal Village
During our visits in Northern India, we discovered a meaningful NGO which directly impacts lives in rural India: The seeds of PYDS were sown fifteen years ago, when on observing the marginal level of education among the poor rural children of Purkal, G.K. Swamy decided to literally take matters in his own hands. He identified students who showed promise and put in long hours with them after school to help them cope up in their studies
Their Vision is to "To enhance the lives of underprivileged rural children through holistic education, nutrition and healthcare”
PYDS is dedicated to enhancing the lives of underprivileged rural young people. To achieve this they offer holistic care and education, and foster in these children a desire for excellence. Part of this mission is instilling in the students a sense of community; a respect for responsible, ethical living, and a desire to preserve the beautiful environment of the Himalayan foothills of their birth.
2)Matraanchal Orphange For Girls
Matraanchal Orphanage For Girls provides a home to children and teaches them the skills and support they need to reach their fullest potential while providing quality education for at risk and destitute girls.

Giving Back; Costa Rica
As the holidays quickly approach, it is this time of year that reminds us of the true spirit and goodness of giving back to each other, and our planet. In the words of H. Jackson Brown Jr., "Remember that the happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving more". It is in this quote that we can all take away the importance of giving back this holiday season.
Though many opt to volunteer locally, it is important to know how you can help globally as well! Travel is one of the best ways to connect cultures and give back to communities much different than your own.
Learning journeys not only specializes in wellness travel, but always connects global NGO work with our journeys. Spend your holiday in Costa Rica volunteering with kids at local schools, orphanages, and repairing towns. Specifically in Costa Rica, Learning Journeys works alongside the NGO Musade. For over 30 years, Musade, an NGO in San Ramon Costa Rica, has been fighting in defense of human rights for women. Musade provides a safe haven for women to grow and live in safety, love and hope. Fostering support and empowerment is the mission, and the organization supports this goal through activities and job development skills. Lovely crafts are produced by the ladies of Musade and can be purchased during your visit a center to help women escaping domestic violence in the San Ramon area.
Travel does not have to only be for oneself, but we should always look to lend a hand to others while abroad, wether it be by physically rebuilding schools, or teaching them about your culture.
For more information on building a community service journey visit www.learningjourneys.com

Mythology of Malta; Atlantis
In the spirit of Halloween season, join us this week as we explore the mythical side of some of our favorite destinations! Many know Malta as a beautiful island with a rich history. However, many do not know the legend that Malta was the site of the legendary lost city of Atlantis!
One of the supporting reasons for this is that Malta is home to some of the world's oldest free-standing temples, older than that of even stonehenge and the Pyramids in Egypt! Additionally, there is geographical evidence that Malta's land suffered a blow a long time ago to the effect of part of the island being "washed away", as part of the island cuts immediately to the sea and off of cliff tops as though it were broken off. This is theorized from Plato's dialogues that a catastrophe such as a volcano eruption took place on the site of Atlantis which caused the land to break off and submerge into the ocean. Going off of this, as many know, Malta is made up of three islands. This is said to have happened from massive earthquakes, breaking the remaining land into three parts.
Another notion connecting Malta to Atlantis is an underwater site referred to as “Ġebel ġol-Baħar”. This site is located under the water of St. Julian's in Malta. “Ġebel ġol-Baħar” consists of three stone clusters with rooms in diameter up to 11 meters, with an avenue through the entrance facing East. Additionally, tracks that paperer to have been placed from a cart are present on this site, giving proof that “Ġebel ġol-Baħar” was once on land.
In addition to being theorized by many philosophers, a last piece of evidence that Atlantis was once part of Malta was when marine scientists in 2013 discovered that geographically, the Maltese islands were once much larger with a land bridge connection to Sicily.

Festivals; Kalachakra - October 7th, 2016
Closing off out our week focusing on international festivals, travel to India this January to witness the 34th Annual Kalachakra, Presided Over By His Holiness The Dali Lama! Since 1954, His Holiness the Dalai Lama has given 33 Kalachakra Initiations, including four times at Bodh Gaya in 1974, 1985, 2003 and 2012. The Kalachakra teachings in 2012 drew over 200,000 devotees from across the world, including 8,000-10,000 Tibetans. The initiation to the Kalachakra is one of the most important because it takes everything in to account: the body, mind, and cosmic and astrological external aspects.
"Kalachakra" is a term used in Vajrayana Buddhism that means wheel of time or "time-cycles", because the Kalachakra tradition revolves around the concept of time (kāla) and cycles (chakra): from the cycles of the planets, to the cycles of human breathing, it teaches the practice of working with the most subtle energies within one's body on the path to enlightenment.
Kalachakra traditionally refers both to Tantric deity of Vajrayana Buddhism and to the philosophies and meditation practices contained within the Kalachakra Tantra. According to some Buddhist masters, Kalachakra is the most advanced form of Vajrayana practice.

Festivals; Carnival;October 4th, 2016
Perillo's Learning Journeys loves to engage travelers in one of a kind experiences. This week we will focus on colorful and exciting Festivals around the world! Welcome to the Carnival of Venice! Taking place February 11-28th in 2017, this globally known festival is decked out with masks, confetti, lights and magnificent colors! This unique celebration is something you do not want to miss. Spend this magical time in beautiful Venice donning a traditional mask and costume, and transform into whoever you want to be! Originating from the ideology of a temporary escape for the lower classes through enjoyment of feasts, and entertainment, Carnival was an opportunity to historically uproot the social class system of Italy and spread enjoyment. Undoubtedly one of the most intreguing things about Carnival is the iconic Venetian masks. The tradition of the mask stemmed from the mingling between the upper and middle Venetian classes in the 13th century at the celebratory parties between December 26th and Lent.
These elaborate masks were worn to conceal identity of aristocrats and peasants alike while engaging in dancing, feasting, and other festivities together. Traditionally, Venetian masks were simple, however today they are quite elaborate; dripping in natural feathers, and gems across these hand painted masks. At Carnival, there are multiple types of masks typically worn; The Bauta which is the traditional simple mask, The Moretta which was created in France and has a more feminine characteristic, The Volto; which covers only the upper half of the face, The Columbina; a highly decorated gold and crystal half mask, and the Medico della Peste; the birdlike mask holding similarities to the traditional Plague Doctor. Taking place from Northern to Southern Italy, Carnival stays true with these long standing traditions to this day of decadent feasts, and rich entertainment for all! Come immerse yourself in these internationally-known festivities. This experience is unforgettable, as many travelers journey to Italy during February each year to parkade in the festivities. NGO's Highlighted: Purkal Village - August 12, 2016 Purkal Youth Development Society Village is an NGO that we support through our journeys to Northern India. Travelers visit Purkal Village in the Himalayan Foothills which is home to many students and workers. Pukal Village had its humble beginnings through a passion to educate and the dedication to enhancing the lives of underprivileged young people in the community. Starting off with makeshift classes operating out of cow sheds and garages, the community children flocked to join this new school but the criteria for taking on new students remained unchanged;they had to want to work and succeed and they had to come from poorest backgrounds. However, within the past 15 years, Purkal Village has enhanced the lives of underprivileged rural children through free holistic education, nutrition and health care. Taking in donations to sustain the school, Purkal Village additionally offers well paid jobs to women and showcases their talents through breath taking quilt designs for profit to upkeep the school. Purl Village is a truly beautiful organization, follow this link to learn more about Purkal Village here: http://www.purkal.org/in/
